This was the 32nd year Benzie Central has participated in Close-Up.  Donna Balazovic took 26 for a week of high energy, action packed activities. The students spent the week watching, participating and learning about our government and how to become an active and involved citizen.

FFA sponsored their annual Swiss Steak dinner.

Student Council maintained the Student of the Month, Alumni of the Month, and Academic Hall of Fame.  They sponsored Homecoming and Snowcoming.    Student Council completed its fundraising to build a memorial outside the auditorium at the high school.  The memorial was built by Westcott Masonry and paid for by funds from Student Council.  The memorial will honor both high school students and staff.  A ceremony will be held during the 08-09 school year.  Council also sponsored a charity drive to help area senior citizens during the Holiday Season.  Members sold candy canes to help cover the cost of necessary items for six local senior citizens.  Items purchased include clothing and hygiene items.  Council also hosted a Holiday Luncheon and Gifting with the high school staff.  Students were treated to a traditional meal on the last day of school before their Holiday Break in December.  Following the luncheon, students participated in traditional activities such as cookie decorating, board games, and ornament making.  They also participated in a drawing fro gifts -- nearly 450 gifts are given out each year.  Santa also make an appearance.  Lastly, Council hosted the annual Spring Fling in May which serves not only as a send off for seniors, but also a time for students to take a break from their classes.  Students were treated to a barbeque and outdoor games.

Explanation of Michigan Merit Exam (MME)
The Michigan Merit Exam is a state mandated exam that is required for all pupils in grade 11. This exam, formally called the MEAP, is a conglomeration of assessments that include the ACT, WorkKeys and portions of the MEAP.  This assessment is used to determine the students progress toward the Michigan Merit Curriculum.

The MME is administered each spring to Michigan 11th grade students. Completing the MME qualifies the student for the $4,000 Michigan Promise scholarship, administered by the Michigan Department of Treasury.

To qualify for the $4,000 scholarship, students must take the complete MME and receive scores in reading, writing, mathematics, and science. To qualify for up-front installment payments from the Department of Treasury, students must achieve the Proficient of Advanced level in those same subjects. They will receive $1,000 during their freshman and sophomore years of college, and then receiving the remaining $2,000 after successfully completing two years of college.

In addition to enabling students to earn the $4,000 scholarship, taking the MME provides students with a free college-reportable ACT score, accepted by a vast majority of colleges in the United States. They also receive an ACT WorkKeys score for employability skills related to reading for information and applied mathematics.

Benzie students are required to take this exam in order to graduate. The state has set up a sliding scale of target goals for students to attain in the content areas. The final goal will be for all students to attain a Level I or II demonstrating their proficiency.

Level I is exceeding Michigan standards, Level II is meeting Michigan standards, Level III is at basic level, and Level IV is apprentice level.
