Points of Pride
  • Lake Ann students participated in the Benzie Food Partners October Food Drive bringing in 359 pounds of food.
  • Fifth graders ran a school store all year and are planning on purchasing a pump for the pond by the cafeteria.

  • One fifth grade student received the “Timberwolf Pride Award”
  • Students participated in the “Caught You” program rewarding them for following school rules and good behavior

Classroom Activities
  • Lake Ann held a Fire Safety / Prevention program for all lower elementary classes.
  • K-2 Spell-a-thon – raised over $4,000.00. Funds spent by all K-2 students spending the day at Lake Ann Camp, and books were purchased for classroom libraries, and each student was given a book to keep.
  • 1st – 5th graders participated in a “Reading the Bases” program with the Beach Bums. 158 students made the homerun goal receiving a free admission ticket and a free ticket for a meal.
  • Kindergarten
    • Visited the Benzie Historical Society
    • Toured Moomers to learn about dairy farming. The students were shown how ice cream is made and were able to enjoy a hayride.
  • First Grade
    • Raised money by collecting pop cans for owl nesting boxes for Wings of Wonder
    • Participated in “To Smart for Strangers” program
    • Participated in an electrical safety program sponsored by Cherryland Electric
    • Took part in a cultural painting exchange with China
    • Participated in a Nutrition Education program provided through a MSU Extension grant
    • Visited Bertram’s Pizza to learn about the pizza business. The students were shown how pizza is made and given the opportunity to make their own personal pizza.
  • Second Grade
    • Both classes visited Cherry Republic and the Empire Bluffs Trail.
  • Third Grade
    • Traveled to Grand Rapids to visit Frederick Meijer Gardens and the IMAX theater.
    • Dressed up and visited the Drake School and visited the Almira History Museum.
    • Enjoyed four sessions presented by Michigan State Police Trooper Nichols
  • Fourth Grade
    • Enjoyed lunch with Representative David Palsrock
    • Visited Lansing, touring the Capitol, Michigan Historical Museum and the R.E. Olds Auto Museum
    • Performed “Geology Rocks” musical to students and parents.
    • Participated in mini-society
  • Fifth Grade
    • Stayed at Camp Hayo-Went-Ha for outdoor education activities.
    • Paired up with the first grade and kindergarten classes and participated in a reading buddy program.
    • Participated in mini-society
    • Performed “American Revolution” musical for students and parents.

Parental Involvement & Community Support

Lake Ann elementary had many parent volunteer helpers throughout the year.  Lake Ann Elementary 'Parents and Teachers United' held Chrysler’s “Drive For The Kids” promotion that raised $505.  Parents and students also saved “Box Tops for Education” raising over $400 for the school.  The PTU also held two book fairs, a spring carnival, a family fun night as well as a family movie night.

  • Crystal Lake Walkabout - site interpreter for water testing in the Fall for Benzie 8th graders and in the Spring for Benzie 6th graders
  • Kindergarten had many parent volunteer helpers throughout the year.

Kiwanis supported our first graders in the Reading is Fundamental program and also the Terrific Kids program for fifth grade students.  Subway rewarded students with Subway certificated for numerous achievements.

Explanation of MEAP
The English Language Arts (ELA) MEAP test was a new method of scoring implemented in 02-03 that responded to the federal mandate titled No Child Left Behind (NCLB). The ELA score reflects a combination of the student’s reading and writing scores. These scores are reported at the 4th, 7th & 11th grade level. As part of the NCLB requirements, each level will be obligated to hit a “target” score established by the State of Michigan. Another part of the NCLB mandate required states to also set targets for scoring in the area of mathematics. These scores too, are reported at the 4th, 8th & 11th grade level. Targets for each subject set by the State are different from level-to-level. Eventually, the targets for each grade level must be 100% of all students in all subjects by the 2013-14 school year.

Level I is exceeding Michigan standards, Level II is meeting Michigan standards, Level III is at basic level, and Level IV is apprentice level.
