This year I have three sections of 7th grade ELA, two sections of 7th grade Honors ELA and one advisory/reading class. I was born down South, and have lived in other places for brief periods, but I attended Benzie schools, graduated from Benzie Central in 1972, and have always considered Benzie county my home. My father, Ed Johnson, taught at Benzie for many years, and my mother, Mary Jo Johnson, started the Crystal Lake co-operative nursery, taught at Benzie, and was the librarian at the Benzonia library for many years. My first teaching job was at Mackinac Island. There were 63 kids K-12. It was an interesting time; the island was beautiful, especially in the winter, the folks were nice, and it was a great place to woo the woman who would later become my wife, but I knew early on that island life was not for me. I would probably have liked the cold, lonely winter nights more if I had computers around me like I do now, but at the time computers were just starting to make their way into the classroom and my life. After Mackinac Island I taught downstate at Holt Schools, a district right outside of Lansing. While I lived in Holt I finished a middle school endorsement program, a post graduate degree, at Michigan State University. I also completed a family counseling program at Eastern Michigan University. I am currently working on a masters degree in technology at Michigan State University. It is a great program; my web site, and many classroom applications are the result of my first year of studies. My students will learn about and with computers throughout this school year. I am convinced that the future road of education will be paved with technology. The successful student for tomorrow will be an information manager, not an information accumulator.
