The reading program for 7th grade English Language Arts  is 25% of each student's total grade in H/ELA.

There are many components in the 7th grade reading program, but the Accelerated Reading program, used in many elementary classrooms, serves as the backbone, or lynchpin for the program.  All students begin the year by taking a reading assessment test -- the acronym for this program is called STARs.  (This test is given in the fall, at semester break in January, and in June.)  Each student then negotiates a reading contract with the teacher.  This contract is sent home, and parents are asked to review the contract with their child and sign it.  The contract signed by teacher, student, and parent is then placed on file for the remainder of the year.  The contract is based on a point based system that is part of the AR program.  Under this program all books are given a point value. Our library has many AR books and quizzes, however, students may read any book with teacher permission for this program.  If there is not a test for the book s/he is reading the student may opt to write a book report, give an oral book report, or create an AR test that other students may take.  Completing the number of points that were agreed upon determines each student's reading grade each marking period.  The student and teacher may renegotiate the contract during the year.  I do check every couple weeks with each student and update grades weekly.
